Family Resemblance by Holly Davis Rao When Lauren Garud, the American wife of an Indian immigrant, adopts an Indian daughter, she can't help but notice how completely dissimilar they seem. A mere four years later, this passive baby has become a spririted strong-willed child, challenging her mother just as daugthers challenge mothers all over the world. But the biggest challenge is yet to come. Skip twenty years ahead. Kiran moves to London and meets Ravi Bhatia, an Englishman, and to everyone it seems like a match made in nirvana. So why is Lauren Garud acting so crazy? And why do Ravi's parents continue to dabble in the marriage market on his behalf? As Kiran and Ravi's attraction increases, they confront the great expectations of both of their families. Ravi must decide if he can bear to disappoint his father, a successful London entrepreneur and businessman, or his mother, an avid Hindu. Kiran must decide whether she can proceed in a relationship that is inexplicably disturbing to her mother, or if she should return to the U.S. at the end of her year abroad. And Lauren must confront her unacknowledged biases and insecurities, which now threaten her family's happiness. Family Resemblance is a light-hearted character driven drama with complex but sympathetic characters and a healthy dose of comedy. A depiction of cross-cultural marriage and cross-cultural adoption, Family Resemblance is a Terms of Endearment with a global twist. Family
